Juliana of Ostra Jewelry / Small Business Interviews / Issue #1

We are so excited to introduce our Small Business Interviews Series! Throughout the market season, we want to highlight the wonderful small businesses of the New England Open Market community. For our first interview, we talked with Juliana of Ostra Jewelry, whose business you can shop on opening day of the Boston Open Market, Saturday, May 3rd, and throughout the season!

Where are you based out of? What is your workspace like?

I'm based in Saugus, Massachusetts. My workspace is a mix of chaos and organization - I can find most things I need, but sometimes I'll only discover them a year later! It keeps the creative process interesting.

How long have you been running Ostra Jewelry? How did your business get its start?

It all started at my kitchen table in January 2020 when I began making clay earrings. Over time, the business evolved to focus solely on metal-smithing.

Have you been participating in in-person markets since the beginning of your business?

The timing wasn't right at the beginning of 2020, but once things started to open up in 2021, I dipped my toes in with about 6 or 7 markets a year. Last year I took the plunge and participated in 81 markets!

How would you describe the aesthetic of Ostra Jewelry?

The aesthetic of Ostra Jewelry is best described as dainty and minimalistic, often featuring a pop of color and cool gemstones. I believe in the beauty of simplicity, and my pieces are designed to be versatile enough for everyday wear while still making a statement.

Please tell us about your creative process - where do you find inspiration? How do you go from inspiration to a finished piece?

I always keep a waterproof notepad handy to jot down my thoughts and ideas whenever inspiration strikes, which often happens in the shower. Once I have a concept in mind, I sketch out my ideas and begin the creation process. This involves cutting the metal, soldering, hammering, and polishing, gradually transforming my initial vision into the finished pieces.

Do you have a favorite piece that you’ve designed?

Yes, my favorite piece is the Ostra Necklace (I'm obsessed with oysters, can you tell?). I love their organic shape, which makes each necklace unique. You'll never find another one exactly like it out there

What is your favorite part of running your business?

The freedom of being my own boss and creating my own schedule. While I definitely work more hours than I would in a traditional 9-to-5 job, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

What is your favorite aspect of vending at in-person art markets?

I absolutely love meeting new people at markets! It’s fascinating to see which pieces resonate with different customers and how they choose to style them, especially when it comes to stacking rings. Plus, being outdoors during summer is a huge bonus.

Is there something you have learned while vending at in-person art markets that has surprised you?

One surprising thing I’ve learned is how connected people can be, even if they don’t know each other. It’s interesting to observe trends; sometimes, a particular style of ring that hasn’t sold in months suddenly becomes a hit. It's very interesting to watch!

Outside of running Ostra Jewelry, what do you enjoy doing?

I love listening to podcasts, going on long walks, reading books, eating oysters and practicing Yoga. Recently, I discovered that I'm quite good at cooking, so I also enjoy trying out new recipes.

Where can you be found online?

You can find my work at ostrajewelry.com and I’d love for you to follow my journey on Instagram @ostrajewelry
